Fuel Tank 1520

Hello, I tried repairing my fuel tank on the tractor I call "Jane". The fiberglass patch was put on meticulously to JB Weld's specs but there is still seepage.

It's not a huge leak but I'd rather it not leak at all. So I'm considering a replacement reproduction.

So part number AL24219 seems to be listed as compatible but AR72910 doesn't. They look the same to me, they are both 25" like my old leaky one, and they both are said to fit the 1020. The 1020 and 1520 will accept the same tank I believe. I found a used poly AR72910 for $200 less than a new one so if it will fit I can save some cash since everything green is gold.

I might be doing something wrong however, when I use the search by part number feature on the JD parts site, neither of the part numbers you are using show as correct for a 1520. The fuel tank part number in the 1520 parts book online is AR72996 (which subs for AT21997).

thanks, so it sounds like the AR72910 will fit. Using the number you found I located a tank and in the description it read… “Replaces Part Number(s): AL24219, AR72910, AR72910-A, AT31633”

Mine has the gasoline engine so I’m good without a return line. My oem tank has the return line fitting on the top but it’s capped off.

Also it looks like the 820, 930, and 1020 tractors all take the same tank and now I am finding numbers that match those and the 1520. All of these are the 25" tall tanks (same as mine) I just wonder if there is a difference in the location of some of the return line ports for the diesel models? Mine is gas so return ports will be plugged anyway.

Does anyone have an opinion about the fitment and utility of the poly tanks versus the fiberglass tanks versus steel?

Obviously the poly and glass tanks won't rust but how are they about fitting the bolt holes, holding up to stress, cracking, splitting, degrading over time etc...

I can't say how the poly and fiberglass tanks fit and hold up, so far, I have been able to repair my steel ones if needed. My one thought would be if you get a tank that doesn't have your part number or says it fits a 1520, and it doesn't fit correctly, you don't have much to stand on if you needed to return it. One of PartsASAP's yard might have a good used steel tank from a 1520 in one of their yards.

Okay analysis paralysis is a real problem with me sometimes LOL but I finally discovered a part number confirmation that the part number AL24219 will fit my tractor and I found a dealer that listed my tractor as compatible with it so I am covered for possible returns. That was good advice Jim.ME thanks everyone for your assistance. I will post an update when it is installed.

Okay the tank I purchased did not fit. The mounting holes were the right dimensions but were too high up on the tank and the filler neck was way too short. (It would not have sat proud of the hood). So I sent it back (seller payed return shipping as they had assured me it would fit before I bought it). Ordered a different tank (AR72996) from All States Ag Parts and it fit with some modification. The tank is fiberglass so the flange is nearly 3/4" thick and required relief in the front cowl's two notches in which the tank rests at the bottom. I also glued 1/4" rubber strips to the frame of the tractor where the bottom of the tank contacts it to resolve any issues related to wear points.

Also since the fuel sending unit obviously cannot receive its necessary ground from the tank I had to run a ground wire from one of the screws to the frame of the tractor.

The only issue I have is that my fuel cap will not fit this tank. My fuel cap is 1 1/2" and the new tank's filler neck is 1 7/16" or there abouts. That was extremely frustrating. Also paint was sprayed inside the filler neck and is already peeling off. I added another fuel filter upstream from the existing one just in case. (Also frustrating)
