I could use a gasket for my fuel cap on my 1460 combine. Most fuel caps have a cork gasket but everyone wants to sell a complete cap. Could I just buy a piece of cork and cut my own?

I have done that successfully on a MM RTE.
I also did not want to buy a whole cap .

Upon a rethink, I used a piece of gasket instead. ( It likely was made of cork)

I would use a piece of fuel resistant rubber instead of cork, but the answer to your question is yes.

Make it out of 1/8" sheet gasket that comes in a roll.
You probably have some left from a previous job.
I believe cork will be too soft.

Some of the cork rolls you buy at hardware and building center stores I find somewhat brittle and crumbly, especially after a year or so. Even cutting it clean can be difficult. The rubberized cork is best like somebody mentioned. You'd probably get it at NAPA or some such place, not at a lumber yard.

Maybe you can cut a piece from an inner tube. had an old gas cap that kept falling off, on my JD, I finally bought a real JD red diesel fuel cap. The new red cap looked real good setting out front on the hood, best looking thing on the whole tractor. It was well worth the money I paid for it. I filled my tank a few days ago, and forgot to put the cap back on. I looked for it, and found I had run over it. Now the cap sits a little crooked, with a dent on the top. Now I see my dented cap all day mowing. I should have bought a piece of cork and tried to save my old cap. stan
