Glow plugs helped some

I put a full set of new glow plugs in the 85 Ford 6.9 diesel yesterday. It started on it's own this morning for the first time in a long time. Still not perfect,but better. It uses some oil,and I suspect the compression might be a little low causing some of the trouble,a new set of rings might make all the difference in the world. But,I guess it's as good as it's gonna get for now.

I have a IH-424D that I need to replace the whole system on (glow plugs, glow indicator, push button energizer, wires). Where did you buy yours and about what did they cost? I realize mine are probably different than yours - but that might give me a ball park figure. Also, anything to watch out for when installing? thanks ! bob f.

Go to IH dealer for yours. Plugs were about 15 dollars a piece the last time I got any. 12 years ago though.

I got the glow plugs at Carquest,just shy of $10 each. Went to the Ford garage first,they aren't in the Ford system anymore,parts guy said he'd have to get aftermarket,so I might as well get them there myself.The new sensor that screws in to the block that I replaced last summer was the big expense,$210. But your tractor doesn't have one. It tells the plugs when to turn off and on according to engine temp. Yours is manual.

Your plugs are hooked completely different than on a truck diesel. Your system has all the glow-plugs hooked in series - so if just one burns out - none of the others can work.

Normally - for other diesels I'd tell you to stay away from Champion plugs - but in this case they're fine and easy to buy - even from NAPA.
Cost around $8 - $10 apiece.

Glow plugs are Champion CH28 (#155).

Don't envy you that job Randy, Last time I put in a set of glow plugs it was a nightmare - just getting to them is a real pain. Then I had three that were so corroded the heads just broke off. So now my 6.2 is starting on 5 glow plugs. Getting in there to try to get the carcasses out is about out of the question!

PS - you're right about the weather on the north end of the county. I'm keeping my head low. When do you have tornados come right down your road in the summer, and than just get missed by 'em again in the month of January?

RRlund: Let me help you out please. Ford still has the plugs, and I would suggest getting them either from Ford, or find Beru plugs. Lot of people have had big problems with aftermarket plugs (including me...) Some of the worst ones swell up when they go bad and cause a lot of drama when yo try to get them out...

If it is still hard starting, how is your cranking speed? To get mine fixed, I ended up putting in 2 new batteries, a rebuilt starter, and new battery cables. The battery cables I bought were aftermarket and were twice as heavy as the OEM ones.

My trucks starts like new now and its 20 years old and has 140k plus on it! Last weekend it was 20 degrees out. The GP's stayed on 13 seconds, and the truck cranked over in under half a second.

It cost me a lot of money, but the truck starts like new now.

Somewhere along the line, I've run across a site where a guy made up some adapters and installed modern dual-coil glowplugs in a 424.

My 424 needs glowplugs, and that's what I intend to do to it.

The parts guy told me they weren't in the system for the 6.9 anymore. The ones I got from Carquest are Autolite. Says on the box same as Motorcraft ZD1. He said he'd have to get aftermarket and they'd be that same thing. She spins fine,has the gear reduction starter. Truck has 185k.
