head torque 1936 A

I replaced the head gasket on my A and torqued the head to125 ft/lbs. Should I retorque the head after it gets warmed up and retorque it while it's warm? I had it running once (about 30 minutes). I re-used the studs, does that make a difference? Thanks.

You need to run it longer than that! A few good heat cycles pulling or doing light work is best, 5 or so hours. Let it cool then retorque!

You can reuse the studs and nuts. Need to take a tap and die to clean stud threads and nut threads. Slide on lead washers. oil threads, nuts on and torque.. You put a sealant on the head gasket?? You got the new head gasket on the right way? Run the tractor under load to heat coolant up . Even cover the radiator to get it hot? Need coolant temp on gauge to be a Hi normal? Retorque same foot pounds and reset valves while hot. Squirt oil on rocker arms and push rods. .

Thanks a bunch for the info--yes, I installed the head gasket correctly, as I installed the previous one upside down (if you want coolant in your oil, do this). Yes, I used Permatex Copper Sealant on the head gasket. I will get the A good and warm/hot before I retorque.

Looks like he's past this point in restoration! I agree with this except for retorquing hot!

well, a google research suggest re-torquing hot, so I guess you do as you see fit. Others will chime in!

John Deere wrote instructions to retorque their heads when the tractor was hot. Why? When you are using our tractors, the coolant is around 180 to 200 degrees. So finish the retorque on a hot engine, when all engine parts are expanded out, head gasket, bolts, so you seal the head gasket tight. Expand and contract.
