How much HP?

KyHayman or anybody else familiar with a 650 NH round baler, what do you think the minumum pto hp should be to pull this baler? I got 62 pto, 68 gross, what do ya think?

Also, what about an 8450 Case-IH? Same question.

Both are 4'x6' machine's.

As far as HP, you will be fine, I think minimum requirement is about 50hp or so. Weight will be your issue, the baler wanting to push the tractor down hills, when the bale is near full. If your tractor is FWA, that will help.

My tractor goes about 8,000-8,500lbs. It is also four wheel drive. I only have one field out of six that has any hills, the rest are flat. I really want a 640 NH, as everything I can find says it only needs 55 hp. I found a good deal on one but I am not 100% sure it has auto-wrap, and it is 2 hours away and the salesman is not sure either. I am really after a 640, but I have found some good priced 650's and I got a dealer friend who has a nice 8450 Case-IH and it is priced right but I believe it to be heavier than the 640 or 650 NH.

That would be the smallest tractor I would want to use. You'll likely feel short of power at times. The specs for the new similiar sized baler from New Holland is 70 PTO HP or 105 PTO HP for the silage special. If you have flat land you should be O.K

The newer NH's call for a litle more hp than the older ones.

Luke, I have been looking a balers all winter, the little Vermeer 4x5 rebel with net wrap has a 40 hp requirement.

i get by with any tractor in the 70 to 80 HP range.but have tw35 170 HP sitting in pole barn.just in case.can never have enought HP in back up.

Luke: If that tractor you have is an M6800 it'll do just fine. My neighbors don't bale with anything else. Put up lots of hay too.
