Got a new to me tractor , ih 254 , tractor is in great shape 1045 hours on it, the three point hiccups bad and drops while using loader , seems to be bypassing somewhere, I tried sourcing new o rings and parts but dealer said it’s all obsolete now, haven’t ripped it apart yet , looking for info on where to get parts or process to trouble shoot what it is

Does it drop some amount then lurch back up to the original position and keep doing that repeatedly? Or does it drop to a new position and stay there? Does the control lever stay in one place or does it move?

I've never touched a 254, so this is mostly a guess. If the first question is yes, you probably have oil leaking by in either the lift cylinder or a check valve. It can probably be fixed with some o-rings. Some of the o-ring sizes are called out in the parts catalog. Others you will just have to measure. Even though discontinued by CIH, they are probably standard size o-rings. If a hardware store doesn't have them, a hydraulic shop probably will. If the lever is moving, there may be some friction device that needs attention.

It gos back to where it’s set at, also will drop fast if tractor is shut off , I took blower off today and it will jitter with just my weight on arms ,

Okay, that strongly suggests leakage either in the cylinder or a check valve. Again no experience with that model, so I don't know if something like a blown gasket can cause this problem. But I think the odds are an o-ring on the piston of the lift cylinder. From the parts catalog, it looks like there is a check valve mounted on the left side. It looks pretty easy to get at. I would be tempted to redo anything inside it that can be refreshed and see if that fixes it. If it doesn't, then see what it takes to access the cylinder. It looks like the lift cylinder piston has an o-ring with a backer ring. So you will probably need to go to a hydraulic shop for replacements. By the way, it looks like everything is metric sizes.

Sure would be nice to hear from someone that has worked on a 254.

I need some help with my ih 254 tractor my lever is real real hard to move I have to make it move up or down with a pipe wrench or something else the 3 point hitch does go up and down when the lever is forced up or down any help would be great thanks

That sounds like a mechanical problem in whatever linkage connects the lever with the hydraulic components. You need to look for what is binding it. It may be rust where a shaft goes through a bearing or something like that. If you are using a pipe wrench on a control lever, you are looking to do more damage. Without some background on the tractor, any suggestions are just speculation. Has it been sitting unused for a long time etc?
