IH 340 Utility question

Hi,
I have an 1963 IH 340 utility gas that I'm having what I think is ignition problems. It was originally a 6 volt positive ground system but had an (old) 12 volt battery on it when I purchased it. The generator which appeared to be a 6 volt went out (literally burned up) probably a result of the 12 volt battery. I replaced the generator, voltage regulator, coil, points, dist cap, condensor, and put a new 6 volt battery on it. The tractor has good spark but will not start. It seems like it's out of time. I set the point gap and dist timing with the service manual and think it should at least be close enough to make the tractor run. Is there something else that might have been changed by the previous owner in an attempt to use the 12 volt battery? Any other ideas? I've checked most of the wiring with the service manual and it appears to be wired like the original 6 volt system. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I think at the same time the person went to 12v he probably went to negative ground. There were reasons for doing this as the old heavy windings of origional starter could handle this. Along the way certain wiring changes were done through ampmeter or volt gages etc. If you are really sure you want to go original there is sometimes a deal added into the ignition= this is a triad type voltage dropping thing, usually ceramic with 2-3 connectors. The important thing to know is that it allows(thru ignition switch full 12v power During starting but then kicks down the volts to not burn up other stuff. So if this is still in the network it will still reduce the already 6v to less than you need to sustain running.

Thanks for the reply. Could you go into a little more detail about the "voltage dropping thing". Where would I look for this? I don"t have a problem with using a 12 volt battery but don"t want to smoke my new generator. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks.
