IH 460 Questions

I have an IH 460, and I have a lot of QUESTIONS! Each place I look it states that it is a 19 56, 1957. or a 1958. How do I find out? The SN is 688. How do I check to see if I need a new voltage regulater? The battery had a dead cell, so I replaced it. Now it will not start. How do I see if it has a charging problem? I just ordered 6 spark plugs. I had to look on yesterdays tractor to find out that I had to grind down a 7/8 deep well socket for that. Is there a [place that I can learn this stuff?

You can learn a lot of stuff by asking questions here. There are also owners and maintenance manuals available you should pick up and I think they are available on this site. You say the tractor won't start - does it crank over or nothing. If its been sitting a long time it may need the points cleaned or possibly replaced. Once you get the tractor running you can see if you have a charging problem. Concerning the year you can look up your serial number on charts that are around, maybe on this site under resources maybe - I've never checked there. You have a low serial number so probably 1956 year. Not sure when production actually started. If 460 serial numbers are like a lot of models then they started at 501 and you would have #188 but I'm not sure of that either.

It was running good for the last 3 years. It was running as of last week. The Battery had a bad cell, and would not take a charge anymore. I replaced the battery, and now it will only crank over. I pulled the plugs, and they were in bad shape, so I ordered some new ones to day. I have gotten the three manuals from here. As for the year each chart that I look at shows a different year. 1956 - 1958 Some parts say it is for a 1957 or earler. It is funny that each chart starts with 501.

By your serial number 688, your tractor is a 1958, covers s/n 501 to 2711. One of your manuals should be an Operators Manual. That will help you the most. Do you have the battery cables hooked up correct? If you have a volt-ohm meter, you can see what the generator is charging. Should be charging around 13-14 volt if good at the battery posts.

Hello Kyle welcome to YT! One thing that has not been established is exactly which 460 you have. I can only assume since you call it an IH 460 and have never mentioned “Farmall” that you have a “460” utility model. There is also an IH Farmall 460 row crop model. The utilities have “International” on the sides of the hoods above the engine. The Farmall models have that on the hood sides. As for learning about grinding the socket etc. that is just all part of the experience as you learn to do mechanical work on machines. I have a set of “mechanics quality” Snap-on brand deep sockets. They just so happen to have thin enough walls that no grinding is necessary on them for that task.

Above I provided a link to the CNHI parts diagram for your tractor. CNHI is the current name of the company that owns the ..IH and Farmall.. names at the moment…
The diagrams there will give you a look at the parts that make up you tractor and where applicable will give you a look at what is inside. If it is not obvious many parts are no longer available. For a time IH simply removed part numbers they no longer sold for these old tractors so a lot of part numbers and descriptions are not there. You can click on a part number and see if the part is available. Also sometimes the prices are insane or laughable however you want to see it. For alternative sources a web search of the part number may be useful.
Adding, as of the last month or so that site has not worked on my iPhone. Due to my phone getting older it does have an updated pending which I don’t have enough memory for that may be the cause. Otherwise it should work fine on almost any other browser.
Edit: Apparently CNHI made some updates, the site now works again on my iPhone.
