International 300 missing part

I was running my 300 and I heard a pop. I shut it off, and I saw fluid leaking from a hole. I assumed it was drain hole but that’s not the case. The hole is not threaded but it obviously had something there because that’s the trans and now the fluid has drained out. I haven’t pulled the bottom pan, but I believe a piece of it is in the bottom. I’d like to try to get what I need before I pull bottom pan.

Pointing to the hole with my finger.

Hello kw welcome to YT! I doubt the pop and oil draining out of those holes are related. That hole (holes there is also one on the other side) is the drain for the TA direct clutch compartment which is a dry area with no oil in it when the seals are holding correctly. I have a photo with a cutaway TA section in reply 3 in the thread linked below. The red rectangle to the left is the TA clutch compartment. The top of it has an odd shaped “bumped up” cover. If your tractor drives normally and the PTO works that would definitely signify nothing has happened to cause the pop and then the oil leak. And FYI if you pull that T shaped cover all the hydraulic oil will drain out of the rear end. If you just got this tractor my guess is the oil always leaked and either enough didn’t build up to leak out or you never noticed it. There are 3 seals that can fail to cause this leak. The front one requires a single split to replace the others require a double split and just about complete disassembly of the TA.
Previous thread with TA photo
Edit to add: If gallons of oil drained out of there it is possible that something malfunctioned big time and broke through the casting somehow and then allowed the trans oil to flow into the dry TA clutch compartment. I have never heard of this happening.

You make a valid point however it definitely made a pop noise and I could hear something rattling in the transmission clutch area. I shut off the tractor and coasted down the hill. Once I got down there I shifted and I can definitely hear something which I thought was probably the other part of the bolt that went in that hole.. There’s no doubt that it could possibly be a bad seal and fluid is leaking in. It’s a 1956 if I recall. I haven’t pulled the bottom pan off because I wanted to get new gaskets and stuff which I got. I live in a very high moisture humid area and anytime I work on something if I leave bare metal out for more than a day or two it just starts getting surface rust.

Maybe I’ll open it and see what piece I’m hearing. It starts up just fine and it appears to shift fine but because I can’t put fluid in there without it leaking out, I hadn’t drove it.

Do you use the TA, what does the sound do when you pull it back? Take off the odd shaped cover 19 in the attached parts breakdown below.(underlined wording below) It won’t give you much access but you can at least take a look. Also take off plate 12 on the bottom to look at the main clutch to see if something came loose in there. There is no oil in the clutch area either. I seriously doubt that you will find anything by pulling the T plate unless your tractor has sounded like there was a bucket of rocks in the transmission for a while, but I’ve been wrong before. That link will let you access all the parts diagrams for your tractor. Clicking words “International 300 Utility…” at the top left will take you to the main listing of “Functional Groups” in Chassis is where the clutch and gear train are. When it opens and asked to select a dealer just X out of that.

If you add oil an it runs out of there you definitely have a big problem!! If you did not and just thought it would you have proved nothing. The tractor will run fine and it will cause no problem for short test runs even if the oil level is down an inch to inch or two below the check plug. I am telling you for certain nothing like a bolt goes in that hole. The inside of there is a dry area just like any other dry clutch if you ever worked on one. The T plate just covers a channel or open area that the live PTO drive shaft passes through and that area has trans fluid in it. Inside the casting continues on across to the other side at the level of where you have your finger separating the lower wet area and the upper dry TA clutch area.
