JD 290 Planter Shift Lever Operation

Good morning!

We recently came across a fairly cheap JD 290 2 row corn planter with fertilizer attachment and are planning to use it to plant a 1 acre plot we use for sweet corn. Last year we used a manual push type disk seeder (think Earth Way but about 40 years old itself). We are hoping this planter will save down on some labor while seeding.

I have purchased a manual for it and have been trying to figure out how to work this thing. It seems much of the operation is focused on "check planting" and "hill drop", this isn't a concern for us we only need it to drill.

Right now there are two main issues. When the planter is lowered the throw-out arm isn't engaging the clutch and I manually have to do it by pulling on the lever on the side of the gear box. Is it possible this throw-out arm is out of adjustment? Should it contact when the planter is lowered?

My second question is more of a head scratcher for me. The manual references the "Shift lever" and setting it on 2,3,4 to set the population, in addition to the sprocket and disk choice. My planter does not have a shift lever. I think it is missing. Can someone explain the operation of the shift lever? Does it move the shaft through the gearbox laterally and in turn change the gearing inside the gear box? Because if that's the case I did try to move the shaft and it wouldn't budge left or right but I didn't force it because I wasn't sure if this was the way.

I really need to figure out that shift setting so I can find the right plates and get the seed/acre right. Since I don't have a lever I am wondering if I can manually shift it then clamp it in place or something to hold it in the right gear.

Any help with someone with an understanding of these JD 290 Planters would be appreciated. Thank you.

I tried to add photos but the site isn't letting me. I can provide link to the images via PM or if someone knows how to better add photos let me know.

If some one else does not do it before me I can snap pics of my 290,, mine has been converted to 3pt hitch so I have the throw out lever tied to stay in gear,, on mine it has numbers cast in the frame or housing I forget which right now, you pull the lever to N then slide the shaft to switch gears, I thought the ops book was pretty clear on that when I read mine,, I know when I first used mine I just pulled it a few feet on a lever grassless area and looked at what the seed placement was, then shifted to a different gear and repeated the test plant until i got what i wanted,, also seems like my dealer got me a seed plate book that I used to pick out plates, I know I had to use it when I bought sunflower seed plates and pretty sure I did the same on corn

Thanks for your reply. I guess I am less worried about the throwout lever as like you mentioned I can tie it to stay in gear for each pass.

For the shift lever if you look at the drawing from the manual I posted, there is a lever that you can lift up and move to different positions.. Now comparing to my pictures of my machine I don't see that lever? If its just missing I should theoretically be able to slide that shaft left or right to change the gears and check the spacing like you mentioned. But when I tried to slide the shaft it wouldnt budge... maybe it is stuck in one gear or another.

Pics of your gearbox/shift level would be appreciated to compare.

All I see is that your tensioning spring doesnt do much for you with the bottom metal bent up like it is. Get that bent square againt and the spring will have correct
tension again and it might work right?

Made it to the shed, sorry mine has some oil/dirt on it but I think you can see what you need to, the gear speeds are in the cast piece the shift lever sets in hope this helps

Yes that is very helpful! I can do something similar with baler wire lol. The second picture confirms I am missing the shift lever and the piece below with the speed markings. My idea will be to slide it left and right and see if I can feel when it changes, there should be three positions. Now to get it to slide....
