JD 290 planter

Hello! Central MN guy here. I've been using my 290 planter for the past 4 years. Always worked great and I've made no adjustments.
Last year I developed 2 issues. 1) my seed spacing became very sporadic. It'll lay perfect seeds then go 6 feet without and seeds dropping. Then good again for a bit then not drop for 20+ feet.. 2) seed will continue to drop after I've lifted the planter up all the way for traveling or turning for rows. I must take off the seed bins to travel and distance as to not drop seed.

The clutches on the shaft under the frame where the wheels pivot are worn out letting the drive turn the shaft. As for the drop problem is probably tied into the clutches being worn out letting it slip under certain conditions stopping the seed drop. If not then the plates may not be the right size for the seed you are using. I would start with looking at the clutches.

I don't know if Deere has anything in inventory anymore. If not, your Deere dealer might be able to locate NOS parts through the Parts Depot. I don't remember what kind of clutches that mechanism uses. Sometimes parts can be built up with weld and machined back to spec.

I would try JD for the parts to rule out that they are no longer available. JD is better than most when providing service parts for older equipment. If that is not the case then maybe building up the clutch dog surface via welding then grinding into shape. I don't know much about the metering unit on the 290 and the parts catalog did not help me. I'm thinking that like a lot of plate planters there is a knockout pawl to push the seed out of the plate after the seed is positioned. These pawls can stick due to rust or the springs getting weak. The springs for the clutch can also get weak. Lots to look at and if like around here you will not be planting for at least another month.

I agree with other members that state possibly worn clutch components. Clutch dog(item 58) is part # AH415B. Parts Depot shows to have 4 dogs available for purchase. No clutch hub(item 46) H2263B shows to be available from Parts Depot. I've read one must go through a participating dealer to get parts from Parts Depot.

When you figure out what you need for parts you might try Greg Stephen at The Old Tractor Company in Franktown Colorado, he has had a lot of NOS Deere parts.
