John 3800 Chopper

I bought a JD 3800 chopper with a 2 row corn head, I would like to make haylage but don't have the head. What pickup head would fit my chopper?

There are 5' and 7' pickup headers. They fit the #38 and later models. I ran a #38 in peppermint and silage with the 5', then after running the 3800 with the same head I changed to the 7' model. It had dolly wheels so all the weight wasn't on the machine, plus I could use my grass seed swather that left a wider windrow and cut 16' instead of 12'....James

Yes. There are two models 5 and 7 foot. I would recommend the 7 foot as well as jwal.

For haulage you will probably need to run a recutter screen.
You feeding haulage to what?
Upright silo or bunker?

The chopped material can have 2 to 3 inch or longer pieces with any chopper as haylage material can come to cutterhead parallel to knives.

Something to remember; the finer you chop the material the more power it takes and you will have to run slower while chopping. Experienced that with a JD 38 we ran back in the 1970's.

If you get a 5 foot pickup post back with a new thread. There is a stripper kit that helps with feeding and durability. Helps hay from wrapping in the pickup drum.

Brother in law had a 3800 on his Dairy Farm. I seem to remember something about there being some with slip clutch on head and some with slip clutch on main unit. 2 slip clutches are Ok, but none is bad, one is enough.
