How can I switch the 1000 pto stub to a 540 stub with common tools on a M F 2705 tractor.it has the hex nut holding it in.

Best would be to build/have built a socket for the hex nut.

Crude but effective is to use a hammer and tapered punch in the two holes that are in the face of the nut.

Why not save all the trouble get a 1000 to 540 adapter and then just use less throttle to run it. Unless you are running something like a chopper where you need the engine power for it a mower or auger would not matter for the engine power as it only needs to run at about 1100 RPM to be at 540 or somewhere close to that speed.

I got the nut out,the 1000pto stub out but the 540 stub I can not get seated in the rear bearing. The rollers of that bearing have just enough play that the shaft can not slide in it's seat. Any advise would be appreciated!

Hello M Fred, welcome to YT! Can you fashion a ring out of a cereal box cardboard much like a toilet paper tube? Using this to hold the rollers up in place, May have to tape it in place. But if the diameter of shaft that slides through is to big this won’t work. Also counting on the debris of the thing not causing a problem when it gets chewed up. Otherwise it is bearing replacement time if you want to swap shaft back and forth.

Follow up.
I put a big glob of grease on that bearing,so that the rollers would stay in there place, inserted the pto shaft very carefull and it worked!
Thank's for all the help!

M F 2705 developed a problem.
The gear shift lever is stuck in the neutral position I cannot move it at all.I can move the power shift lever up and down and in reverse freely. The tractor can be pulled.
