Memorial Day Weekend Disking Video....

Like. I put my sudan patch in a little over a week ago. Rain last weekend. Friday night, Saturday morning 3/4 inch, Sunday another 3/4 inch. Will find out what today brings. No getting in the field in SW MO for a couple of days.

It's tough to have to do all of your tillage in a straight line, instead of having enough ground to cross hatch it on the second disc, or springtooth pass.

I used to run the same direction as the plow pass on the first disc pass, then incorporate the fertilizer on the second disc pass at an angle to the first disc pass. Springtooth would then be the opposite angle.........................only drilling would be done at the same direction as the first plow down.

Only thing a springtooth is good for, is filling the furrows from the disc pass.................and only when it's run at an angle to that disc pass.

I like that idea & will give it a try in a bigger field. It's a pain to turn the 560 & disc back there, much less the disc & spring tooth. The H usually goes on the springtooth for the figure 8 pattern as it's easier to navigate with.

For a garden patch, like yours, I really don't see that you had a choice. Is what it is.

Some of the old timers, around here, used to run a "leveler" behind the springtooth. It was simply a piece of heavy wall pipe chained to the back of the springtooth. It works tolerably well. Not 100%, but will somewhat knock down the furrows.

Another thing that really firms up a seedbed.............................let's say you plowed at 8"..............set the first disc pass at near the the depth you plowed........................set the next disc pass at around 6"...........and make a final springtooth pass at around 3" or so. Each shallower pass packs the layer beneath it. Better germination.

K'kins has been wanting a garden. I figure we'll break it out with the plow, disc it to break the plow slabs, then clean it up with a tiller. Not sure how it'll work, but it's about my best guess at this point????????????? Here again......it's a space issue. Where we want to put the garden, doesn't have enough space to be doing fancy cross hatch tillage with the stuff I have.

I seem to recall that my Uncle plowed Grama's garden the first time, then she used a tiller from then on, throughout the years.
