My new tractor...............

Just got it last weekend to replace a smaller Kubota I had. This is an M7040. It is a 62pto hp tractor that is fully loaded. I will use it to cut, ted, rake square bale, and round bale hay and keep pasture mower, as well has for feeding hay.

Well, I am young, and I am having fun. The way I look at it is I don't owe a nickel on anything I own except my farm, and I see all these other fools going out and spending $50g's on a camper or boat or horse trailer, or going out to dinner every night and we don't do any of that. The one and only thing in this old world I wanted was a tractor with a nice cab, so now I got it. And I can right it off on my taxes, and now I can send the wife out to cut hay while I am at work and not feel guilty about it!

And don't worry about any tractor pulls, none of my tractors get withing 20 miles of one. Never did understand all these local farmers taking their working tractors into town and pull the guts out of em just for grins? I don't know, I count on my tractors to make a living for my family, why would I want to deliberatly abuse them?

Good point about the camper and going out to eat thing. It is getting to be a bad american habit. OF COURSE, nothing wrong with travelling and giong out once in a while, but it is MORE commendable to save up for what you really NEED.

I don't anticipate any trouble with it. This'll be the fourth one I've had, used em all plenty hard, maintain them good though, and I've never had to take any one of em back to the dealer ever. Can't say that for our JD's and NH's.

I was kidding about the having trouble with it. I doubt you'll take this one in either. Only ever took ours in twice. Once for the flip and once when the 4wd wouldn't disengage.

You made a great decision to get a Kubota, I got an M8540 on Wednesday, fully loaded and it is real great. It was even greater to see that 7 year old John Deere go out the gate.

I think I've only seen maybe 2 Kubotas torn down for major repairs in the shop of the local dealer, and both of those had considerable age on them as well as having all the appearances of being totally abused. I strongly doubt you will ever have ANY problems.

That's a nice machine, take care of and it'll take care of you. But just one comment from somebody who spent years chasing dollars and my nose against the grindstone: All work and no play, Makes Luke a dull boy! Take momma out to eat now and then, give her a break from slinging hash and ironing clothes. Don't make a habit of burning the candle from both ends. I don't owe a soul for anything..I wrote a $32K check for that new green machine in the shed a couple years ago. Being a good financial manager is the key to success...as my banker once told me years ago when I was in business, "you'll never spend yourself out of debt." I built 2 successful businesses and never took a dime out of them until they paid out. After the banker was paid...it was all gravy. Remember that tax write offs HELP, but you don't get all that expenditure back..it just lowers your tax burden by getting you in a lower bracket. Uncle Sam never bought anybody a new tractor or anything else...which is a stupid comment I have heard many people make: "Uncle Sam is paying for this...." When Uncle writes the check for it, you might be able to say that, until then, YOU are paying for it.

Naa I backed out on the accumulator. I decided I will keep baling on the wagon as long as I can get help, if I can't get help it's going up in 4'x6' rounds as they are bringing $50-$75 round these parts.

Had a new disc mower and sold it. It could cut through anything like a hot knife through butter, but I had no conditioning, even running a tedder behind it still took me an extra day or two to get it dried down. So I sold it and went back to a NH 9' sickle type mower conditioner. I have to drive slower, but I can bale at least a day sooner if not two.

4-speed with a high-low for a total of 8, and it has a hydraulic shuttle for forward and reverse that can be shifted either way without clutching.

Naa, I just get tired of working on old stuff all the time. I run a business in town as well as farm on the side. The business keeps me 50-60 hrs a week and when I finally get time to farm I don't have time for stuff to be breaking. The last old tractor I farmed with was a 74' Oliver 1955. I had to work on it all winter to keep it running all summer. I had three times more money tied up in it than what it would sell for, and it still needed a hydraulic pump, three tires and was not far away from needing an engine overhaul. I like old tractors to tinker on and put around with for fun when I have the time. But when I need something to work, I need it to work, not break. That's why for serious farm work I got that new orange one.
