New idea snapping rolls

Picking season will be here in a couple of months. Im trying to get my 323 ready to go. Last year I was having trouble with the stalks breaking off and building up in the head and under the machine. I had done a lot of reading and found a couple of things that may help. I found a junk machine that had the rotating paddle that goes in the head to help move stalk peices along. I also have read about the possibility of needing to build up the snapping rolls with some weld. I dont know which area of the snapping rolls need to be addressed, could someone enlighten me as to where to weld on the rolls? Also there was one obscure mention about attaching rubber belt straps about 8 inches long to the snapping rolls. Had anyone heard of this and how would one go about attaching them?

I wouldn't weld on them. That won't stop stalks from breaking. It'll only cause it to shell more. Brittle stalks can be maddening for sure. On a 324 and 325 there was a beater that was available for break them up even more and push them down in to the primary elevator. Mine doesn't have it, but there have been days that I'd give a thousand dollars to have it. I did bolt some baler belting to the other beater that sits back higher above the elevator so thay flop out and knock the trash down. It helped some. I don't think the's anything you can do to the rolls though that'll help the situation.

If you still have issues, contact Country Machinery in Leola, PA. (717) 656-9733 Amish shop that rebuilds New Idea pickers, also making new replacement picker parts. They have come up with solutions for problems that didn't exist when the pickers were new.

You weld on the top of the little notch that pulls the stalk down when those pockets wear down. Need to be careful not to get too high.

But as mentioned, that would make your problem worse, not better. This is a fix for when it doesn’t pull the stalks through at all.

Never heard of the belt thing.
