New water pump issue

Installing a new water pump in a 1966 830 Case Tractor diesel with the 301 engine in it. The new and old water pump have an approximate 3/8 inch diameter hole in the top of them that are threaded. The old plug will not remove it. It’s only been there 50 years grabbed a 3/8 pipe plug to plug the hole. But the threads don’t match. Can anyone share size and thread type for this plug? Thank you

I just replaced the water pump on a 930 diesel. I know it is a different pump than the 830 but the smaller hole on mine took a 3/8 " pipe thread, larger hole took a 3/4" plug. My replacement pump came from Parts ASAP (host of this forum. see my current post on Tractor Talk). I did just look up the pump for the 830 and it shows NLA from Case. However, the Case pump shows a 3/8" pipe plug. Check with whoever you got your replacement pump from.

Diameter of 3/8 npt pipe plug major thread is .675 inch. The zerk fitting #9 hole can be about .44 inch for the older style zerk with 1/8 inch npt pipe thread, that's the same tpi as a 7/16 inch bolt thread that is not a taper pipe type thread.

If you want the plug that is in the old pump, get your acetylene torch, heat it red hot and let it cool, it will screw out easy.
