O/T C6 trans

I am thinking of rebuilding my c6 in my 86 F-350 it's a diesel and seems to dislike the auto trans. this is the 3rd and it only has 120,000 miles on it 4 counting the original I want to upgrade this one it will be my first complete rebuild on a trans.A trans. rebuilder friend or mine says it will kick my rear since I have never built a trans.just wanted to get the thoughts of do it yourself folks like you all on improvement procedures as well as precautions. I guess I should say I would rather get my friend to do it but with only 20 hrs a week I can't afford the reduced price he gave me but told him I am glad he is trying to help

I rebuilt a Turbo 350 in a Chevy 4x4 pickup once. I bought an overhaul kit and an overhaul manual, and set to work. Anytime throughout the process when special tools were needed, I jury-rigged or fabricated. I did make an adapter to mount the trans on my engine stand. Made it a lot easier.

The trans worked fine when I got done. I just never had the need to do another.

Keep in mind that a cousin of mine, who was once a Ford tech and overhauled transmissions routinely, once said that overhauling transmissions is 10% technical knowledge, 10% physical effort, and 80% housekeeping. In other words, keep everything meticously clean!

My son bitched about only getting 176,000 with the factory trans in his 96 powerstroke,put a reworked one in witb better cooling and it is now at 260,000 doesn't think he improved it,doubts it will make it to 300,000.

I have a friend of mine who used to be a trans tech. I would drop by the shop to visit, he would talk and work nonstop. He could rebuild an automatic so fast it was scary. One thing I noticed, he used an impact to take things apart, but he always hand started and hand wrenched everything back together, very careful with a torque wrench, and very clean. Would clean up his work area after every job.

yeah I'm that way on all the engines I build check things 2+3 times that's why it takes me a while to build them

The C6 is a very rugged and simple trans - and doesn't need a mile-long list of updates and upgrades like the later E40D. I did mine over 100K miles ago and it's been fine. When you buy direct, good trans parts are very cheap.
6.9 diesel does not make an awful lot of power anyway - so if you've got mechanical aptitude, you better off doing it yourself.

Ford C6 and GM TH400 are probably the two best auto transmissions ever made - too made there's no OD in them.

Before you rebuild the trans, make sure everything else is working properly. I went through this on a Ford f250 diesel. Make sure the vacuum pump is working and providing enough vacuum. The diesel engine has a seperate vacumm pump. I rebuilt one trans before I figured it was the pump. Replaced the pump and had no further problems.

If you do it your self, make sure you replace the seals that apply the pressure to the clutch packs. You may need to make a device to compress the springs to get them apart. A c6 is not too bad to work on. I have done a few 700r4 GM's and I can see why they named them . There must be 700 parts to get 4 speeds and reverse. Get a complete master kit for your c6 and put it in. It will have everything you should need.

I had mine rebuilt by the "best" in town. After the fifth time he gave me my money back and I got a new one. They seem to be pretty tough to rebuild, even for the pro's.

the pump is nearly new but thanks for the suggestion this trans was just old and worked fine so I think I may change the gears in the rear to help on the take off I also intend on adding clutches to it that is why I need the book to tell me how. I may even put 2 coolers on it now it has one that I put on also I am going to add a in-line filter.A friend of mine told me of a 5 speed manual in a 93 that I may be able to pick up with all the clutch parts so I may do that. Better low range with a better high to help on fuel mileage sounds good just alot of work putting that clutch pedal in
