I have wrapped them in damp paper towels and kept them in the drawers in the bottom of the ice box. Not sure how long they will last like that, and don't remember how long I kept them in there. Someone else will surely have a better idea.

How long do you plan to keep them ???

From best to worst.
Do what is called heal them in.
Get a bucket of moist sand and plant them.

Put them in a jar with enough water it only covers the roots and sit them on a window sill.

Wrap in a moist paper towel and put in fridge.

The key is to remove from packaging including a rubber band and spread them out enough for air circulation and keeping the roots moist.

I was told, decades ago, that you want to keep onions for whatever reason, get some of your wife/girlfriends/daughter/or other females's nylon stockings that had a rip or tear and would otherwise be discarded....put in an onion, twist the nylon and clamp, drop an onion, repeat the twist thing, etc. etc......

Edit this AM: My remarks were directed at mature (large) unions, not planters.....just now realized my error.
