OT - 05 Dodge Durango DOA - help

OK, here"s one for any of you guys. Driving along and truck just shut off. Took it to the dealer - no codes, no nuthin. They said it"s fine... This is the 3rd time this has happened. Fortunately all 3 times, it was at low speed, but the scary thing is that you lose everything when it does happen - power steering, power brakes, everything. Any suggestions? Any Dodge Mechanics out there? Any way to get Dodge to fix it right? Thanks,

Plan on leaving it with them for a few days, have them hook up the flight recorder scanner, that will capture any memory as it happens. Authorize them to drive it some miles til it happens. How many miles are on this? If it were mine, I'd be checking the plug in on the ignition switch and the plug in on the main firewall connector. May be a fault inside the wiring loom too. Be prepared to answer what kind of driving you were doing, what kind of road you were on, and if it was warmed up or not when it quit.

What does your tach read at idle? Does this only happen when the engine is warm?

My stepson HAD a new Neon with the boomity boom box radio and rear spoiler, fancy wheels and tires..The Neon had a running problem , starting problem right out of the box...Technicians couldn't do anything for him because it wasn't spitting out any codes..Come to find out , whatever caused the problems with his car , wasn't programmed into the computer system of the Neon..After being towed to the dealermany times, no one figured it out..Even had some hotshots from Chrysler come out to look at it..They couldn't help him either..The last time it screwed him was in the middle lane of Rt. 20 running thru Lake County..Someone with a pick-up truck pushed him off the road..He made a "Bee-Line" for the Subaru dealer and bought an Impressa..All wheel drive with the flat 4 engine. His Neon is still on the lot at Subaru after 2 months..I hear it won't run...The "Roo" starts and runs sweet...Good Luck

I seen some strange things when I worked in my friend's shop..I've seen copper wire turn green on the ends and screw up a computer, I've seen computers screw up and have to be replaced, one a Dodge van..$700 for the computer. If you are under warranty demand a new computer, if the one in it isn't giving codes for a shut down stall out I'd be suspicious of the computer..coils and cam pick ups..maybe but the computer should show a code for failed ignition..fuel shut down same thing there should be a code to tell what has happened... our scan tool would even tell which cylinder was misfiring...they should know.. the computer is the starting point of this repair. My '01 Ram 1500 did that at speed (70mph) going down hill on I-70 in Colorado. SCARY.

Did it again twice at low speed.

Required replacing ECM. Did under warranty for emissions.

Demand a new computer ??? What street in OZ were you brought up .. They won't change ANYTHING unless it's proven defective...Flat rate mechanics won't waste their time on it..They don't get paid for diagnosis..They get paid for repairing the problem..If the computer won't spit out a code.....Thats too bad.....S*cks to be you....

The computer won't set a code if it only thinks it was shut off. Ideally a recorder needs to be put on it to watch powers to the computer but there is a back door with a data scanner. If the Key cycle display goes to zero on the next key on after the shutdown occurs the problem is in the computer. If it does not go to zero but remembers total key counts the problem is in the supply to it.

battery cables, a relay, bad ground connection or ignition switch will cause it to die. The power drop doesn't have to be total either, going below 9.5 volt will shut it down.

Thanks for all the replies guys. The really tough thing about this whole ordeal is that it's only done it 3 times in the last 40000 miles. It's technically not in warranty (36k), but since it's happened twice in warranty, they're "SO FAR" taking care of the "warranty" issue. I'm just a little nervous having my wife and kids in there if it should shut down with her driving it. Even with me driving, what if the trailer's on there, and I"m going thru the mountains?

No amount of money would bring them back, if something happened, but I don't think Daimler wants to find out how much wouldn't be enough either... I'll let you know next week.

Had that trouble with a couple cars. I had to replace the ignition control module on the back of the engine. Finally cleared it up.
