OT: internet service provider problem

Remember a few months ago internet Explorer timed out (110) & I could only rarely come to ytmag? Still is the case, can get in here only about once a month. Computer came with netscape browser & I finally shut down I.E. & used Netscape to get here. Slow as heck but works so far. We tried the tests & the ISP did not seem to be the problem. But now that I"m back I get email from ISP saying I"m being kicked off & to find another ISP. He (Outdoorsdot net) says I use the internet too much & he"s losing money on me!? Did you ever hear of such a thing?

If you want a alternate browser, go to Mozilla and download their free FIREFOX. It resembles IE-7. My experience is it is faster than IE.

Time to switch ISPs.

There are plenty of ISPs that will provide unlimited dialup for ten bucks a month, just go with a local provider so you're using their lines. (Your ISP may have been losing money on you, since they probably have to pay another ISP when you dial in.)

The problem you were having getting to ytmag is probably bad DNS lookup from your ISP, NOT your browser. Netscape/Firefox won't get to any site that IE can't get to.

Something sure seems extra squirrelly with your symptoms...

It is possible you've got a piece of malware installed as a plug-in to Internet Explorer that is redirecting your web requests. That's the only thing I can think of that would allow Netscape to get there, but not IE.

Have you tried booting up in "safe mode with networking" (hit F8 as your PC very first boots up) and then try to get to the website??

I'd be curious if that helps. If so, you may have something in your startup list that is causing trouble.

Several pieces of malware watch for you trying to go to a website and then redirect you somewhere else - but they can be very buggy or poorly written and often just wind up make Internet service crummy.

Not sure what to tell you about the ISP kicking you off - you don't have any kids in the house downloading huge amounts of music or pictures, do you?

Also, certain viruses can cause HUGE amounts of traffic.

If your ISP really knows what they are talking about, they might be able to tell you exactly what type of traffic they think you are generating and give a clue as where the problem is...

Hey 2x4 are you using dialup or broadband? I assume dialup. For testing. If you want, send me an email and I'll send you a username, password and a Pop# to connect to. I'll need your ph# or at least your areacode and prefix.

I work for an ISP at least for a little while yet. They are closing my call center.

I agree with Howard H that spyware and virii will slow you down like crazy as they use all the bandwidth to send their poison. Also expains the compaint of using it too much.

What version of Windows are you using? Sometimes the computer needs a bit of work to reset the networking componants.

If you are using IE 7 get rid of it and then get IE 6 it will work OK but 7 has some major problems that don't seem to work on older computers.

windows defender... is free and works pretty good at cleaning up your computer.. or use the (free version) of windows one care it could take all night but it will check for bugs and clean the reg. as well... Best of luck Rickey

web request doesnt get re-directed, it just times out alto lots of sites take much longer to come in. Will try f8. No kids, jes download one pic a week email sometimes. Plan to contact ISP as soon as I find out a few more facts. He has given me 2 weeks to get a new ISP. He contacted me; I never sent him anything altho he seems to be answering something. Says he sent me numerous emails "warning" me to curb my usage but I didnt change my ways. Small wonder! I never got a thing except monthly emails sent to everyone.

I have used every Windows starting with 3.1 and winXP is my favorite Microsoft operating system. It has been the most stable and not near as bloated as Vista. With win95 and win98 I had to restart my computer at least twice a day. WinME sucked big time not stable at all, crashed near hourly and it refused to network with my other computers. Win2000 has been great. Use it at work and has been very stable. WinXP has been as stable with some extra tools I like, and a bit more user friendly.

I have yet to see a computer that can use dialup while in safe mode. It won't load the drivers for the modem.
It does work with Lan cards and connecting to other computers like in an office or with DSL/cable.

Hey 2by4

Why don't you try netzero.net. I have had it for years and it gives me 10 hours free a month. If you need more time they have that too, and are not that expensive. Do a search and see if it is available in your area.
