Oxy/act torch troubles

Was using my model750 ConAir tourch yesterday and flames started coming out of the act control knob. Sure caught my attention fast! Was able to just turn the knob off to stop the flames. But now what? My local welding shop sold out to a big corporate outfit and they don’t fix torches. I can buy a oring kit for it but I’m hesitant to try to fix it myself. Any advice?

I'd take the knob off and take the valve apart. It may be an o ring, or a packing. packing can be replaced or tightened. O rings can be replaced, I'm pretty sure o rings used with acetylene are a different material than universal kits.

I'm thinking this is torch he has.

I was charged $19 for my Victor rebuild and $23 for an Airco clone. They come back bead blasted, operate smooth, and completely clean inside with new seals of course. A very good $42 bill I was happy to pay.

To avoid a handle fire, always open gas and let it purge for about a second per foot of hose. Once lit, open oxy by cracking it very slow to purge N2 from hose and handle. Shut off gas first always and then oxy. I do a fair amount of gas welding because I work off-grid with only a small gen that does not support amps for electric welding. Handle fires suck, and mess up the flow from the mixing nozzle.

Yeah, that’s the torch. I took the valve off but not apart yet. I see a steel ring clip holding the valve together. I can get it apart and I can get a oring kit for about $50. So I could probably fix it but, heck what if I don’t get it right? Not sure that after I put in new parts I would have the nerve to light it. I think I’ll just get a new torch/tips.
Thanks for your help
