MIL's significant other was Engine room Chief on the Utah when it rolled over. He and his crew were securing the engine room. When it started to roll, they ran for the deck hatches. Before they reached the top deck hatch, they were running on the bulkheads. Curt was the last person out, when the 12" timbers that were covering the deck (it was being used for bombing practice) slid, covering the hatch, and trapping the rest of his crew. He told me that her had never talked about it before, but, because I was a combat veteran, he felt that I would understand the guilt that he felt. I was able to recant the story at his funeral services, which his family had never heard. They were extremely grateful to know of it. If I remember from some history, that I have read; The Japaneses thought it was a carrier, due to the timbers covering the decks.
