removing rust in carburetor

there is a lot of gritty rust in my 400 case-0 matic carburetor..it is cast iron ,,. i have some muratic acid but i recall using it on a aluminum or pot metal carburetor to clean it and the metal started to dissolve ,,..maybe you guys have a better solution ,,.please post back with your ideas.

I use end brushes, of different sizes, with a cordless drill. Cast cleans very well with these and any pit that won't come clean can be hit with muratic acid or rust dissolver.

Vinegar 1part , water2parts in a stewing pot .Send your wife to the grocery store first. Medium heat for 1hr .stir carb and related parts occasionally . Then get it off the stove and back to the shop before she returns. do not ask me how I know this! CM

Yup, muriatic/hydrochloric acid will dissolve zinc, magnesium, and most pot metals. Phosphoric acid (naval jelly) is a little better and generally a better choice for rust removal, but leaves a residue behind that I'm not sure I'd want in my carb. Products like 'Evap-O-Rust' will be fine on most metals but also leave a residue, and generally work like crap. The vinegar solution Chuck Machinist suggested and a soft-ish (brass or nylon) brush is your best option. Don't go at it with a steel brush as it's harder than zinc/pot metal/magnesium.

Hi:

That sounds effective and gentle. I was looking for something to use on my honey extractor. Not quite case related or motor related but I thought I would ask. The cages (metal) which hold the honey frames is what I would like to clean up.

Thanks for letting me but in.

I do as Chuck Machinist except I have my
own slow cooker in the shop. I might add a
couple of drops Dawn dish washing soap.
