Serial number for JD 301A

Need year for 301A. Sadly killed the 152ci 3 cil diesel, so I need to get one of those. Decided to get the year of manufacture and what unit it is.

Might want to post this on the JD board where someone such as TX Jim could recommend a substitute engine. Serial number should be near RH axle housing facing forward.. I'm thinking that a 179 out of a 2240 might fit but will defer to others with more experience.

Any JD 3 cyl engine built in Dubuque, Mannheim or Saran factory will fit a 301A. I didn't locate a 301A serial chart.

I think you will need to ask a dealer to get the actual year unless someone here has dealer serial number books. The serial numbers of industrial equipment is not readily available lists online as you find for Ag tractors. Your serial number starting with 219 puts it in the 1974/1975 range from info I find.

Both the 3164 and 3179 should bolt in place of the 3152. You likely will need to swap some parts from yours to the newer engine to fit up to your tractor. You also want to be sure you get an engine with a structural block for your 301A. They built some engines with lighter blocks that were used in equipment like pumps and compressor which had frames the engine set on.

I didn’t mean the engine. Already found one for 500$. I meant the tractor’s serial number.

As stated in my prior post the serial number should be located proximate to the RH axle housing facing to the front of the tractor. Tractor data should come up with a year based on that information.

That is in the picture. As that is the plate on the rear axle housing.

The ag version of the 301A is the 1020.

And if you look at the serial number charts here and at tractor data the 1020 serial numbers do not go that high. I believe 1020 production stopped in 1973. You posted in another post that you bought it in 1984 and thought it was a 1974.

I take it the picture of a serial number tag is the tractor tag located on the side of the transmission case. A better picture showing everything on the tag would be good, but the 6-digit number starting with 219 fits with some other industrial equipment serial numbers and years, that was why I said 1974-1975. Beyond this i think you will need to work with your dealer to find the year. JMHO

Jim, it's strange, but you sure seem to be right about industrial serial numbers. I couldn't find them anywhere. Certainly, tractordata does not list them.

Edit: the closest I could find is occasional discussion of a variety of specific serial numbers on this site in old posts.

Sometimes you can find machines for sale at places like Tractorhouse that show a serial number and a year. Of course, the info has to be taken with a grain of salt. If you're lucky you find several with serial numbers and years given that trend correctly. Done that several times trying to help someone.

If one knows the serial number as in this case, the year amounts to nothing in the parts catalog. Serial number breaks are most generally used for identifying part change points, not year of the machine.
