Over the years I have found that no 1 manual gives you all the info one needs to do a complete job. I-T manuals are okay and the factory service manual is good but they tend to be made for person who already know a good bit about working on a tractor etc.

I agree with the others. The IT manualo tends to cover too many models but sometimes has specs in it the service manual doesn't. When I overhauled the Torque Amplifier on my SMTA I used factory service manual, It manual and parts manual at different times.

I have been able to find most everything I need to know online, I do have the owners manuals for most everything I use, but sometimes I need more. For example, I need to check the valve clearance on our 2001 JD 4600, I found the specs and printed them, but I'm a little unsure how I'm going to turn the engine over. Maybe if I google it someone will have some good advice. If I had a JD shop manual it would say to use a JD engine turning tool no 46! It has 1400 hours on it, runs perfect, and the mosquitos are way too bad at the farm to do it now, but maybe if I fog the garage first!

IMHO the genuine Case manuals are the best to use whether it be service or parts as pictured. Many of mine have greasy finger prints from previous usage and occasionally the new part number written in blue ink. I've bought mine at shows, auctions, online, and my first book, for a Case 300, from a Case dealer 33 yes ago.

I like owning the parts manual also. It not only is good for getting parts but it can show you what all is in something before you start removing bolts and find yourself with a lot of little parts you didn't know were in there. Before the days of internet ordering I used to look up the part I wanted and take the manual to the dealer to order. Made everyone's life easier since they didn't have to find old manuals they rarely used any more and most likely was talking to a parts man that hadn't ever used them anyway. I know you can find parts diagrams on line but I like sitting down in a chair with the manual and a cup of coffee to figure out parts I need or may need.

If you are looking at a machine to buy, and the service manual is available, look at the greasiest page, and you will find out what is most likeley to go wrong with it.

I get the I&T manuals for all my tractors and they get me by pretty well in most cases. I can usually find service manuals online and download them to print when needed and many times only parts diagrams are adequate.

For all my major equipment I OWN the owners manual,parts manual and factory service manual no one manual will cover what you need to know when you have to fix something
