sherman transmission

need a little info from one and all. i would like an explanation of a shermman transmission. are there different arrangements or all the same. what is accomplished by using a sherman. versus a standard transmission

Not sure about what tractors they were put in besides Ford (probably Ferguson at least). Ones I know of were either to give you more speeds (over drive, under drive, or over and under drive)or a reversing transmission for loader work. Problem is, they affect the pto speed too, so you have to use the direct gear for pto work.

What tractor do you have ? Depending on the tractor , Shermans were an option when Fords were bought new . Sherman made a low range, a high range , & a combination hi/low . Also there was a reverser & creeper . What they do is change the gear ratio to the regular transmissions .The best one to have is the combo . Lo range gave you more low range for power in pulling . Hi range of course would give you more speed for travel to & from places . Go to John Smiths website & get a good history of Shermans . HTH ! If you need more help write me at [email protected] . thanks for the replies. it is on a 9N. ford thinking about purchasing it. but had questions about the transmission.

I restored a 9N about a year ago with a step up.

Only problem I ran into is the output shaft of the sherman is the input shaft for the ford Trans. This shaft is also has the race for the main shaft for the ford Trans built into it. If that race is in good shape you are golden, if not you need to start hunting. They can be found just a little tough.

No real good way to know until you take it apart.
