Starter issues

Quick follow up! Problem is solved! After taking a step back and reading all the responses I checked the starter and it was turning backwards! Turned the brushes 90 degrees and now everything works! Now on to the ignition system! Thanks for all the replies!

6 volt starters have heavier internal wiring because it takes double the amperage to turn compared to 12 volt. 12 volt can be made cheaper with lighter internal wiring. On all of our 6 volt starters running on 12 volts I've replaced exactly 1 throw out spring since about 1978.

Well that would depend on what the starter is designed to turn. Equal torque rated starters in 24 volt compared to 12 volt could theoretically be made cheaper since the amperage required to do the same job would be less. Of course we all know that 24 volt starters aren't normally used in light duty applications, so the point is moot. I stand by my assertion that it would be cheaper to build a 12 volt starter with the same torque as a 6 volt. The starter can also be smaller and lighter weight in 12 vs 6volt. My 6 volt Farmalls and 40s/50s trucks like 12 volt batteries just fine.
