Living along a highway growing up, I remember the phone ringing in the middle of the night. Then dad would uttered those very words.

There was one June morning when Ma yelled up the stairs The cows are on the tracks. I was very awake very quick.

A knock on the door in the middle of the night. ''Sheriff's department. We had a call. Your cows are out.''

Yes, on a Sunday morning and when you got them in and went to feed them, the silo unloader decided it was stuck or needed repaired. By mid morning the cows milked and finally feed, you check the maternity pen and realize Bessie needed Veterinarian care. And sometime early afternoon you can finally settle down for breakfast.

A lady who used to work for me told me once that the only time she ever heard her father swear was when the hogs got out.

(quoted from post at 10:36:05 08/23/23) True to the picture, they always run down the middle of the road so you can't get around them without braving the ditch.
f you take it slow, you can work through the herd as long as they are milling around.

The day my youngest daughter got her learner's permit we went out for her first drive. Since we had been watching 'Keeping up Appearances', I couldn't resist telling her "mind the cows dear". It was near sunset, Black Angus are a bit hard to see in dim light and it took her a minute to realize that they were all over the road ahead. After a momentary bit of confusion, she threaded her way through without any problems.
