Wandering Pyrenees

Just got Mongo, our rescue pyrenees, a little over a month ago.
I've had pyrenees before, and they might go visit the immediate neighbors, but this one ROAMS.
Found him this morning at the feed mill, 4-1/2 miles from home.
The other day, he was 4 miles the other direction.

Think I'm seeing the reason he was at the shelter.

I've got a shock collar on him, and if I catch him heading out the driveway (1/2 mile in length) he'll turn around if he gets zapped. Doesn't care about the tone or vibration functions.

So I'm thinking about one of those GPS collars.
Prices range from around $100 (reviews seem sketchy to me, could be phony? ;))
to $550 plus $10/month for a cell subscription for the good one. (ouch)

He needs to be able to run my place, about 160 acres, so a lot of the limited range collars are out.

Thoughts on controlling Mongo?

You could put an Apple air tag on your dog if you want to go the cheap(er) route. No monthly fees. But it will only work when in close proximity to people who have iPhones. In other words, when the dog is by himself roaming out in the country, it won’t track.

This doesn't help I know. But he is a pyrenees, he is gonna roam. Either let him roam or get a puppy. He will not leave that puppy.

At least that has been my experience.

If all you are looking for is a collar that tells you where he is, I've had great success with Tractiv for my dog. It has no control feature but allows you a great deal of flexibility.

Our Pyrenees/Akbash pretty much always stays within 1/4 to 1/2 mile of home. Very rarely does she stray from the home 80 acres. That is until I let our Anatolian Shepherd/Pyrenees loose. He thinks as far as he can see is his realm. He always comes home, but I don't like him roaming that far. And when he roams, the other dog roams with him. We too are considering the gps collar for him. I'd rather pay the $500 for the collar than have him get after a neighbor's pets or livestock.

I think part of the problem is we got him as a 3 year old rescue. Pretty much set in his ways.
Although the shock collar broke him from chasing chickens.
We never had this large a roaming problem with our other pyr's, but we got them as 8-10 week old pups.

Yeah, that's another part of the problem.
Our heeler/collie cross, Dot, will follow when he roams.

Looked at the $100 collars, biggest problem I have with them is they don't differentiate between travel directions. If the dog gets past the boundary, it'll get shocked when it tries to get home. And I've seen Mongo take a couple shocks before he pays attention.

The Dogtra is $200, no tracking, can set up 2 boundaries so if the first doesn't stop him, maybe the second will. Biggest problem I see with this is the need to remove the collar when he comes inside. A blocked GPS signal could trigger a correction.

Dogtra

The $549 option offers tracking should the dog break free.

Halo 4

Don't know what I'm gonna do yet.

Do you have animals for him to guard? Sheep, goats? Mark.

Why does he need to be able to roam 160 acres? My farm was 180 acres but I put underground fence around my 7 acre buildings and grove.

We have cows, 40 mommas, but he's not there yet. He's curious, but not in a "this is my herd" way. Only been a month.
My understanding from the rescue place is his first owner wanted him for a house pet not realizing how big a Pyrenees is. (people are dumb)
Second owner just threw him out with livestock, not confining them so they would bond, and I guess that didn't work.
So here we are...

I see him inside. to me those dogs should never be in a house. not sure if this dog likes where he is and knows that is home..... maybe this ... my Pyrenees get trained with a 12 gauge. if I catch them off my property I go out and chase them down and start shooting. they have to be 1/2 mile or so off. if i get within 200 yards I aim right at him and fire. only had 1 that i needed to do it twice to. Pyrenees do not like the sound of gun shots. A 22 semi works as well but can't aim at him. I have only heard one of my dogs yelp when I shot at them they stay home after that.

also had them chase cars off the driveway, I jump in the vehicle they like to chase and stop and empty my rifle as fast as I can and yell at them one treatment and no more chasing cars.

my friend has one and he used the shocking collar, dog never learnt anything except stay home as long as the battery isn't dead. he has a neighbour that would not be impressed and may call the cops if he took a rifle to chase the dog home.

a 3 year old might never make your place home and will never stay. I still think you may have to get a pup.

Pyrenees are bred to be livestock guardian dogs.

If you do not have something for them to guard at home. Be it a puppy, chickens, cattle or any other livestock. They will wonder off in search of something their mind is telling them to guard.

I have a Halo GPS collar and it works great. Has sound, vibration and shock features. It's rhe most expensive brand now and requires a monthly fee as well. I have had it for several years and it still works great. It does have some shortcomings I wish they would address. One is battery life, it lasts about 12 hours. That means you can use it for the day time or night time. A replaceable battery so you could have 2 and charge one and use one for 24 hour use would be better. It could have better cel coverage. We have poor cel phone service at the farm and the collar has trouble communicating when my phone shows 2 bars or less, so I cant always tell where he is. My daughter has 2 Anatolians and has the collars and they seem to work well for them.

Three years old and you have only had him a month? I would say he isn't sure where home is yet. Our rescued Airedale took 3 or 4 months before he was sure we were his hoomans. Lots of people have great luck with "wireless fences" and most of the companies have dog people on staff who will help you with a problem. You can always go with a "tracking" collar like the Garmin the hound guys use, but they are expensive. Most of them have a range of 5 miles +. Neutering may help, but he is like a teenage boy with experience with a willing female! Never had any experience with a Pyrenees, but I'll bet you can find a trainer who has. Delmar Smith used to say "you got to be smarter than the dog, but not much"

We have a Pyrenees/anatolian cross here to guard livestock and for about the first year we couldn’t keep her on the farm. She wanted to follow any vehicle that left the driveway.
We went with the Invisible Fence brand gps collar. It was quite pricy and you have to change the battery every day but it totally stopped her from wandering.
Well worth the money.
