What is roto cut

Im looking at a caseih baler that says it has roto cut, what is it and what does it do? Is there an advantage?

It means that the hay is fed through a shredder before it is rolled into the bale. So instead of long stringy hay in the bale you get nicely chopped 6" pieces. On nearly every bale with the feature you can retract the knives and bale the hay full length if you want.

As BE stated. They chop hay into fine pieces as they enter the baler.

Friend has a NH baler with a rotary cutter. He never uses it and wishes that he had not gotten the option. For if the hay is not right and in near perfect condition. The cutter robs a lot of horse power from the tractor.

They started making those for a couple reasons. One was to get more hay into a bale/be able to pack the bale tighter. Second was if the hay got a bit old and stemmy, you could chop it into shorter pieces, theoretically making it slightly more palatable.

There is an advantage primarily if you bale wet hay and wrap it, more hay in the bale means a tighter bale with less air in it for spoilage and less plastic used to wrap it. The big disadvantage is horsepower requirements. It definitely takes more power to use it.

I had a Vermeer 504 Pro baler with roto cut. You could set the number of knives that you wanted to use, thereby setting the length of the cut of the hay. Also, this baler has a hydraulic floor in it, if the baler plugs up, you can lower the floor from the tractor and clear the baler.

This requires more horsepower when using the cutting knives. At least 125 hp on the pto. As others have mentioned, it’s great for green/wet bales.
