why did john deere run the clutch on the H off the camshaft?? what was the advantage?

because the H only had horsepower in the lower two digits at 1400 RPM's, it was more feasible to run the pulley off the cam shaft BOTH to reduce the speed of the belt AND to increase available torque.

My guess and it is only a guess. The small engine couldn't make enough power without turning high rpm. Using the cam is like a gear reduction and it keeps belt pulley at proper speed. The little H engine turned high rpm for John Deeres of that day. Any one have a better guess or have facts?
