I've seen that before but I have no idea what they were thinking designing something like that.

Isn't that called a 'bow saw' (or some such.) I would think slightly less likely to pinch the bar, but I bet there were times they sawed clear through and then couldn't get the saw back out.

Powered bow saw. Mainly used for tree pruning and bucking firewood from pulp wood sized logs.

Tho you can still buy them, the bars and chains. They are not as popular as they once were.

Most saw manufacturers recommend against using bow bars due to their high kickback risk, but they're still available from third party suppliers. Mainly for bucking firewood.

Used them extensively cutting Christmas trees. That dog on the end controls the kickback.

They were the cat's meow when folks cut short pulpwood in the south here years ago. Almost every pulpwood truck had one or more bow saws riding in the cab or in a steel box on the top front of the rack over the truck cab..

Curious as to the advantage of having the bow verses a straight bar? Was it so you could just swing it around like a wild man and cut everything in its path?

Cut with the tip. Just push it straight ahead. Some real advantages in the right situation.

I have used one for cutting brush. Push in to cut, let the saw idle, pull back out, most of the brush is carried out by the big "hole" in the bar. Works really well especially well for sticker bushes. You don't have to grab the stickers with your hands.

I'll bet that design saw can take the operator for a ride in a hurry.
