Wiring a Hustler zero turn help

I replaced a tired Intek 21HP Briggs engine with another Intek engine 19HP this time and I'm struggling with the wiring. My issue is with the carb solenoid. The solenoid doesn't work as intended. I have to jumper wire from the positive side of the battery to the carb solenoid so gas flows. That means the engine runs until I disconnect the jumper wire then engine runs out of gas. The key switch should stop the gas flow. I'm missing something??? I'm not using the hustler as is and the wife doesn't like baling.

Quick answer is to add a single pole toggle switch. Extra step in start and shutdown but would eliminate jumper wire. Other wise with test light find terminal on current switch that is hot when on/starting and off when switch is off.

You must have the correct key switch for the engine you are using.

Yes they may look the same. Buy they're not always the same.

Hi Mule Meat, I can see I didn't deliver the message correctly. Sorry about that.

It's not a key issue. Using the key, engine turns over, has spark, has fuel to the carb solenoid and will fire only if I squirt gas into the carb. It will run for a couple of seconds then dies once the gas is consumed.

I can tell the solenoid's plunger does not allow gas to enter/pass threw the carb. Solenoid's plunger does not move/click. I've verified that.

Now if I run a jumper wire from the positive post on the battery directly to the same solenoid, then use the key switch to start engine. Engine starts and runs fine.

BUT, now to shut off the engine I must break the jumper wire circuit. The mower is not safe using a jumper wire.

Mule Meat is correct in that key switches look the same but are different. Not seeing the connector I can only say that you should have a wire from the mower side with 12 volt power with key on. That should be solenoid power. Also the key switch should kill the spark when turned off. You have more than one problem.

Guys, I didn't think about the engine switch compatibility since this is the 4th Briggs Intek motor install but I believe the carb is from a different manufacturer. Oversight on my part. The solenoids are not the same. I'll have to check the out. Be a day or two before I get back on this project.

Very simple, solenoid needs power from switch when you turn it on and power killed when you turn it off. Easy to check wires off ignition switch, usually powers off the ignition wire

I know you said it would be a couple of days before you got back to it, just adding somethings to check. It has been a couple of years since I messed with a Briggs engine, both my mowers are Kohlers but here goes. The white connector from the engine to the mower should have 3 wires on the engine side. 1 is charging circuit, 1 is ignition kill and 1 is fuel solenoid power. There may be more depending on where the starter solenoid is and oil pressure switch, if it has one. Compare where those are located to the motor you removed. I am guessing that is your problem because you are not getting power to the solenoid and the key is not killing the engine. It may be as simple as repining the connector. Just something else to check.
