Wishing well

Pa built each of us 6 siblings a wishing well when we bought our first place. So for me it was 48 yrs ago. I need to replace the cedar shingles. I've done Roofing with asphalt shingles and tin but never wood.
Anything I should know?

Use a chalk line to keep the bottoms straight, and use a template on each end made from hardboard or thin plywood to set the chalk line. Keep splits between shingles as far as possible to avoid water inflow. At least 2 nails in each shingle and none thinner than 2-1/2 inches, 3 is better. Split shingles with curved side edges need to be trimmed to a good parallel edge, square with the bottom of the shingle. Jim
