I am looking for responses from JANicholson and Cherlieu through private messages.
TO ALL.. here are instructions on how the “Private Messaging” works on the new software. When you see a number on the “envelope icon” at the top of the page that means someone has sent you a “Private Message” this software calls them “Conversations” Click the letter icon and if someone sent you a PM it will show there. A box will also show up at the bottom “Start a new Conversation” There is a box there called “Recipients” If you type a member handle in that box the members name will pop up in the drop down for you to select. You can select as many members as you want to be in on your “conversation” only the members you choose and yourself will see what is written. You will “Title” the PM, also pictures and links can be added just as if this was a forum post.
There are a couple options at the bottom one is:
“Allow anyone in the conversation to invite others” that is fairly self explanatory. When checked it allows you or other chosen participants to add more members to the conversation.
The other option is:
“Lock conversation (no responses will be allowed)”
I assume this is like hanging up the phone in a way. I think it will still allow the other recipients to view the “conversation” but nothing else can be added. That is the way I perceive it will work, maybe YT support has more info on that.
Maybe this has been discussed elsewhere maybe on Tales, if so I generally choose to stay out of all the juicy details that happen over there.

I think you've wandered into what's essentially ''private messaging''? Is that what you want vs. an open Forum?

I WANT nothing!! I am just offering instructions to others on how the “Private Messaging” works. I did not think it would be that much of a riddle to figure out the purpose of the post. I did expect to hopefully gain replies to the PMs I sent the two gentleman I mentioned.
Used Red, I agree that's the way it is supposed to work, but with the newness of all this, I think a few of the PM's aren't discovered by their intended recipients. I've got one hanging out there for RRLund, but he may have said to hill with it and left completely. steve

There are times when a private message is desirable. For instance, if you're buying or selling something, since that's not allowed in the forums. Or if you want to exchange email addresses or phone numbers without sharing it with the whole world. Or simply for private correspondence not related to the forum topics.
That's what I have always used the PM function for. Nothing nefarious about it.

I think Private Message is great.
Me and you can argue till our ears smoke with no fear of Kim kicking us off the site.
No fear of you having to wait for a response from me because you can not Private Message me.
I turned it off.
You got something to say to me or about me no need to hide behind a curtain.
Post it on the forum for everyone to see.

When contact info needs to be exchanged it's a GOOD thing, otherwise I agree with you 100%!

John, that is certainly your choice to turn it off. My use will probably be more down the lines of what Rich’sToys mentions above. There is no longer an email option unless it is exchanged openly. I will probably use it in situations were the answer to a mechanical problem is X, and a fellow member usually agrees with X. This time he answers Y, in such case I would rather discuss his differing answers without “calling him out” so to speak in the public forum. Just my way of thinking.

There is quite likely a capitalization and spelling requirement for it to work. I have no numbers in my header area, nor on your post. My handle is Janicholson not JANicholson and Charlie's handle is different as well. Jim

Yup, I agree Rich ..... those would be situations where PM's would work. Also good for sending photos of your medical issues wherever they might be on your body. I never can figure out guys doing that. Somehow another YT'ers appendix scar or toenail fungus doesn't really do it for me .... 🤒🤒

Capitalization appears not to matter no matter where in the username as far as typing it into the search box.
Choices will still show if using upper or lower case.

So if I give a wrong answer to a problem you would rather let that stand in a searchable forum for future people to see and discuss how much of a dumb as I am for giving such a dumb answer in private rather than call me out and give the correct answer for everyone to see.
Yep that makes perfect sense.

John, I have worked with a few folks from Louisiana during my time at the refinery. I thought they were all reasonably good folks, just a little hard to understand there speech at times. You may be slightly swaying that opinion by only trying to find everything negative about my suggestion to use the “Conversations” feature this forum offers.
To your question, my point in having a conversation with them out of public scrutiny would be to find out what there answer is based on to help me to be able to understand why they are taking that position. Then I would state what my answer is based on back to them and then we hopefully could come to an agreement. In the end posting what we believe is the most correct answer or reply. If I do not necessarily feel they are giving proper advice there is in fact no way I can make them agree with me or post anything that they feel is not agreeing with their final opinion.
I hopefully will be able to work with most folks on here in a honest, level headed fashion. The dozen or so members I have met in person or talked to on the phone seem to support my opinion that the majority of folks interested in old machinery are pleasant and congenial. Now I suppose you can save this and jam it in my face when I veer off from this approach. If you feel that is really the best way to spend your time here more power to you.
