Im new to tractors in general. I have a 51 ferguson t020 and a 5ft bush hog. At times while bush hogging the draft control will raise the bush hog and cause the shaft to be pulled off the pto. How can i prevent this and what am i doing wrong. Thanks in advance

Hello Steve, welcome to YT! The part of the shaft that has internal splines to slide over the external splines on the tractor shaft is called the yoke. The yoke should have a way that it locks on the tractor PTO shaft so it does not come off. Usually with a through bolt or pin or more common is a spring loaded mechanism that holds onto the groove that is cut all the way around the PTO shaft. Usually moving a collar on the shaft allows that to release from the groove so the yoke can be removed. The PTO “telescopes” to make up any difference in the geometry as the bush hog raises up and down. Also, it is a good idea to have an “over running clutch” on these old tractors with PTOs that drive off the transmission. Do you have one of those? This prevents the spinning momentum of the bush hog blades from continuing to drive the tractor forward even though you have pushed the clutch down to stop forward motion. Take a picture or two of your connection to the PTO that will help us diagnose your problem. The pictures will attach through the “attach files” button on the lower left.

Used addressed your shaft issues. Is your 3 point control lever moving when the unit raises or is it the 3 point just coming up randomly on its own? Before you make a permanent fix to the shaft, make sure that the height it is raising to will not cause a bind if it stays connected. Not familiar with TO20s, but on my 8ns, the draft control can be turned off for mowing and the 3 point stays in the position it is set at.
