i love splitting wood like that. what is it? of course, after 15 years of splitting elm by hand, i like the way most any other wood looks when split.

that was the last thing i did today just before heading in the house a bit ago. so i dont need anymore practice.

I would love to come help, but I have a hang nail on my left thumb, so I can't do any strenuous activities til it heals.

For little stuff like that why split it just more work to burn. I don't split it unless it will not go in the door and most times I don't get much that big with a 27 inch door lots fits. I do try to split it to halves ir quarters if it is more than about 12 inches. Need night blocks .

I used to think that way, but then struggling to toss the second big one in over the first big one got annoying. Plus splitting it down more gives more surface area in the burn chamber of my OWB. Less die outs. Add the bonus of my wife and kids being able to tend the furnace, and splitting it a little smaller is of great benefit.

There was a time I would have jumped at the chance to help but that task and a bunch of other things I used to do are only on my list if it is an emergency. Like last year when the furnace quit during a blizzard, then the wind blew when it was below zero. The fireplace kept us warm fir a week. I am glad to be back on the heat pump.
