What is this?

Looks like a burner of some sort. Threads where a jar screws on. From my FIL’s shop. He was a furnace man in the 60’s, then sheet metal for the rest of his career.

i am trying to figure out which is the inlet side if its a burner. looka like it has feet on the bottom , and the inlet is on the thread side. but threads for what? looks like it has a sealing gasket also. maybe its not the complete thing.?
 
Looks to me like one of two things. Either a lead melting stationary burner for iron pipe hubs, or a heater for a hot bulb tractor engine for starting. Jim
Agree: reminds me of lead pot burner at former employer (50 years ago). It screwed on special 10 lb. propane bottle where cover cap did. Valve opening was up. Straight discharge at tank pressure, no regulator.

He does have a box of irons and what I will call ingots. I think they are aluminum, but it’s been some time since I looked in there. I recall the irons were about 14 inches long, wood handles, square stock that tapered to a four-sided point.

I had never seen these tools while he was alive, so I am just guessing. I’ll post pictures when I can.

Agree also, had an uncle ,plumber by trade, he had a 20 lb propane that would thread right up to that, I observed it used for his steam pipe thaw "apparatus".
The op mentioned sheet metal worker i have seen copper ductwork with lead sealed joints.

The irons you are describing sound like soldering irons/coppers don't know the proper term. Probably used for sheet metal work.

It's the burner for a lead pot. It screws on top of a "special" #20 propane tank.

Plumbers used them for cast iron lead and oakum joints and for "lead bends" (lead drain pipe). Lineman also used them for "wiping" lead and paper splices. High voltage and telephone.

My Dad's neighbor is a retired underground splicer (high volt). My Dad got a burner from him a few years back and I found him a propane tank. The tank is so old that the valve has to be "backseated". It doesn't have a stem seal and has to be opened all the way to keep it from leaking. He uses it for fishing weights.

We wouldn't have used it in sheet metal work. We would use an iron that was heated in a charcoal "lantern". Basically a big soldering iron. You hold the iron on the sheet and apply the lead "bar" to the sheet (copper, tin, galvanized, or stainless). The lanterns have been outlawed here. Now they use a propane iron, sort of looks like a weed burner.

Look for a bar of ammoniac. This is used to prep the iron for tining. It's done very frequently. This is the only box I've ever seen it in. It looks like a bar of soap, likely the middle will be dished out and burnt black/ brown maybe with traces of solder.

The irons that Janicholson posted are for, I believe, "wiping" lead bends and "caulking cast iron bell and spigot ". This is on the plumbing side of things. I admit that I have no direct experience with this.

I am a Sheet Metal Worker by trade. The only sheet mental soldering I have ever done was mostly in my apprentice classes. A kid in my class, Dane, spent his apprenticeship at Philadelphia City Hall performing restoration work. For the most part Dane taught that portion of the class, our instructor didn't have any field experience soldering copper. Dane had some really great pictures of working in Billy Penn's hat. Google - Philadelphia City Hall.

Picture #2 is the bottom, of the burner, the propane tanks were 20# with the special top to screw to burner on.

Lol! Good times! I had 4 years of day class, and we did everything by hand. Including layout.

You are right about the heat. We had natural gas laterns. When the iron gets cold, put it in. When it gets hot, take it out. Lol!

My 4th year I did mostly "government" work for the "Mumers" and some local churches. But, I did find time to make a small copper bird house to give to my Mom for Christmas. Next time I'm up at their place, I'll snap a picture.

I took a picture at school of the charcoal "lantern" to heat an iron for sheet metal work. The gas burner to the right would be used for shop work.
