Massey Ferguson 65

Going to look at a Massey Ferguson 65 gas tomorrow. The guy says it is leaking out of the thermostat housing and has to run with the choke on, he’s rebuilt the carb but still won’t run right? Wanting $1500 for it. Do these sound like serious problems? Would it be worth that? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks!

Those would not be serious problems on the surface. As long as it is the thermostat housing/hose connection, not the neck on the head itself, it could be cracked or corroded causing the leak and could be replaced. Running with the choke on could be a bad carb rebuild, tune up issues, or deeper issues. Are the tires and rims good to go for a while? How is the sheet metal and seat? Do the brakes, hydraulics, and PTO work correctly? Does it shift and stay in gear? Engine oil pressure? It might be a good buy for 1500, or not. Too little info to make a fair assessment with. JMHO

If the tires and sheet metal are Ok+ and the engine runs on all cylinders, I would say it is at value price wise. Jim

A ;ot of people think putting in a new needle valve and a gasket is rebuilding a carburetor,99% is cleaning the ports in the body.

That's true. I'd say most can be cleaned and be good to go without replacing anything. And I'll take a 60 year old Marvel Schebler in need of rebuild any day over a new in box Chinese replacement..
