Case 480ck - fuel flow problem Any Suggetsions?

480 C Construction King Loader Backhoe
I need some advice please. My backhoe has a fuel issue that we can not figure out. Any help would be appreciated. When the problem started the backhoe would be running fine then it would cut off like it was out of fuel. It started out a once in a while thing. It would cut off, wait a few minutes and it would crank up and run fine. Then you could crank it, it would run for a minute then die.
We washed out the diesel tank, changed the filters, changed the injectors, spent $1100.00 dollars getting pump rebuilt and now it will only runs on starter fluid.

You list all the things you changed but you do not say you bled the fuel system, that must happen. With all you have had apart and replaced you will need to bleed everything clear to the injectors. Do you know how to bleed the system including the injectors?

Below are a couple pages on the fuel system and bleeding it from a 480CK Operator's manual. The last step that they don't tell here is how to bleed the injector lines. After you have done the things in the document you need to loosen the nuts, on the lines going from the injection pump up to the nozzles (injectors), on the nozzle end. Just loosen, you do not need to remove them. A word of caution: DO NOT GET HANDS, FINGERS, OR OTHER BODY PARTS AROUND THE HIGH-PRESSURE LINES BETWEEN THE PUMP AND THE INJECTION NOZZLES. FUEL OIL INJECTED INTO THE BODY TISSUE CAN LEAD TO DEATH. The same applies to hydraulic system work. With the lines loose, open the throttle completely, and put the fuel stop in the run position (I am assuming your 480CK has a pull to stop knob, which begs the question of do you have it adjusted properly so it can go to the run position?). Crank the engine for 15 to 20 seconds at a time allowing a minute or so for the starter to cool between cranking times watch for fuel coming out around the loose fitting. When you see a fair bit of fuel leaking from a loose nut you can tighten that one. Repeat until you have seen fuel from all of them and tightened the nuts on the lines. It should start if everything is correct.

At a minimum you need to invest in the Operator's Manual for your machine. Getting a copy of the Service Manual might be good also. be sure you get the right ones for your 480CK as different series of the 480s used different manuals. This site's store is one place that sells manuals. Your case dealer and eBay are other places.
