Ford 8N Rocker

Good evenin' I have a Ford 8n. I believe it is a 1949(the date in the operators manual says 1949). I can't seem to find a serial number on the engine, I guess this is beside the point. My main confusion is the fact in my pics the rocker for the top link only has 1 slot instead if 3. It also is held in by a slewve instead of what I am assuming is supposed to be a pin. The loose top link bolt is temporary lol. I don't understand how in God's green earth a normal top link will fit without being cut down. I had a smaller bolt since that was the only way to get a top link in. I plan on acually using the tractor this year and I am not sure what to do. Do I just grind a bit off of the hump on the top link or do have to get a special one. Thanks

The top link you are using is not made for an N Ford. Get the proper sized top link. Yours is too large.

"It also is held in by a slewve instead of what I am assuming is supposed to be a pin." Sleeve is factory

The 49 "Rocker" only had 1 spot for the top link. Looks like you are also missing the pin. Here is a photo from my 48.

I suppose my tractor is a 1949 then! Thanks. I was wondering why there was a slot for a pin... It is held by a sleeve right now. How do you get a top link to fit in there though? Any links that I have tried have way to large of a hump, hence, the smaller bolt to compensate.

From a long time Ford expert:

The long pin,8n486A wasdesigned by Harry Ferguson for use with the Ferguson wagon. They were installed on the 48 and early 49 8ns,but due to the law suit, were forbidden to use them after serial number 237337.I see no use for the long pin.Ferguson modified the pin to make it a hinged pin.The hinged pin is still available. The only diff is that it folds in the middle to make it easier to get in.Again, I say....there is no use for the pin.It was replaced by 8n486B ,which is the short pin.IMHO don b
Also, the long pin fits inside the sleeve.

There is one at TSC that will fit it. I can get some measurements later if needed. I believe the 48-50 has the same rocker but I will let the experts correct me if im wrong. The 51-52 and possibly the late 50 had the rocker with the extra connections.

His currently has no pin at all though just the sleeve. He will need to put some kind of pin in there.

Does the shorter pin not use the sleeve JMOR?

Is it necessary to have a pin or is the sleeve good enough?

Ill let JMOR correct me if needed but if you have the sleeve you either need to add the long pin or remove the sleeve and add the shorter pin I think. The long pin was original if you care about that sort of thing.

Long pin that goes through the sleeve.

Short pin that requires removing the sleeve first.

That sleeve metal is harder than the pins. You will have a h3ll of a time trying to remove it. My FIL's 8N has been used & abused for over 60 years with only the sleeve.
