Generator type?

'48 8N Ford, front mount distro, and considering replacing the generator. The generator on it has 3 wires and terminals, I believe ground and field on the barrel and armature on the back face. It also has a screwdriver high/low adjustment. That would make the generator a 8N1000A? Also, if rather than re-building it i just replace it, does it make a difference to the voltage regulator which type generator is used as a replacement?

Yes on both 10000A and does it matter. A 3-brush gen is self limiting in the current output and the 8N10505A regulator did not need to have a current regulating function & did not have such. Two brush generators need a regulator that regulates both voltage and current , 8N10505B. All 8N generators were type-A, meaning field power was supplied from inside the generator and field current was regulated by the regulator varying the grounding or not of the Field terminal on the gen. Some later Ford tractors used type-B gens with fields being supplied power from outside the gen by a different type regulator. Type A or B gens must have a matching type regulator.

How do you replace both at the same time since I don't have markings on either the voltage regulator or the generator? Jepsen manual has nothing on the subject and the FO-4 only shows a schematic with a regulator 8N10505 with a 8N10000 B or C generator. FO-4 has the descriptions of 6 generators total but nothing on how to match them to a voltage regulator. Amazon has for sale generators 8N10000 A, C, and none and regulators 8N1050 A, B, C, and none. How do you match them from the product descriptions?

You can use the 10505B or C regs on any of the 8N generators. The 8N10505A reg is probably no longer available.
It is possible to sort it all out, but Amazon is likely to yield less info than a good tractor parts house. I will also say that life is easier & less costly if one forgets the gen & Reg and goes with the ever present Delco 10SI alternator.
