No, we could dial it direct. But we had a party line. One long ring was for the other party. Two short rings was for us. Sometimes we would go to make a phone call and pick it up and there would be two people having a conversation. We just had to wait for them to finish.

Our # was Gundy 1-B
The neighbors knew that was our call sign ...... three longs and two shorts.
And yes the line was a bloody party line.
One night I was on the line BSSSing with my cousin. We knew who all had just picked up their phones and were rubbernecking.
I asked my cousin if he had notice old lady Taylor's daughter sure had a big sett of hooootters?
Bang she hung up!
Then my cousin asked me if had noticed the their second daughter looked more like the milk man from two counties over......well we did not know the second daughter was on the line.
Next day my mother had a visit from old lady Taylor.
The dog crap hit the fan.....
