New project Tractor

I inherited this tractor from my great grandpa. It used to reside at a cabin in Idaho before he passed away. I have many memories there and lots of sentimental value in this equipment. My first goal is to get it running get a new bucket (The original one was stolen) and tires. Unfortunately I don't have any paperwork and the only tag I could find was faded except 4819 J. After doing research it looks like a 1963. Any help finding out the model or engine would be very much appreciated. All I know is it's a 4 cylinder gas engine with the IH logo on the front. I can get more pictures this week. Let me know if there are anything I should specifically look for.

might be a 340

Looks like the next series newer than a 340. It might be a 404 Utility or 504 Utility. A 404 has a 4- speed main transmission and a C-135 engine (should be cast into the block). A 504 has 5-speeds and a C-153 engine.

Hello BigMak, welcome to YT! Look for casting codes on the engine and main transmission sections this will tell you within 3 months or so what year it was built. See photo.

If it is a 424, serial number 4819 would be mid 1965 model

I don't know but did not that rib on the center top of the hood like the 06 series start in the 60's like that and the 560 has versus the hump like the H and M had was in the 50's and back? If so that would seem to date the tractor to the early 60's maybe the late 50's. As for the model Have no idea would guess more like a 460 utility though they had a 6 cylinder didn't they?

Second picture shows model starts with 4, ends with 4. Dash looks like an 04 series. Fenders look like it too....James

There is a badge with the model number on it, on the lower left front side panel.

It's a 4-something-4, 404 Utility is my guess.

Thanks for all the replies! I am not used to such positive help from forums, lol. I'll take a look later this week to find the casting number on the engine and transmission. Luckily, I work at a parts store and can get filters, plugs and wires for cheap so I'll pick some up and keep you guys updated.

Casting numbers really make no difference now that the model is revealed. It’s a 1963 by your serial number just as you said, assuming it is a 404 as b.y. said.

The model number is right there on the left front corner of the tractor, plain as day. All you need to do is get an angle where it's not blocked by the loader bracket, and read it.

The white side panels on my 424 slant backwards. It looks like the white side panels in the picture slant forwards like they do on the 404. I'm guessing 404.

Not a 424 - the brake pedals are much different style.

I see a coil and big resistor with a new looking bracket on the mag. Wonder if he started to convert it?

It did have a 12V battery in the tray. If you mean a 12V conversion

It is the International 404 built in the US ,the dash looks same as my 504 one size larger.

Yes, it is for sure a 404. I was able to work on it for a few hours yesterday. After a tune up, assessment, and cleaning the water out of the intake it fires up with some starting fluid. It does not run on its own yet but it sounds healthy. Next task is to get new rear tires, the rims are rusted through.

I suspect a fuel problem is keeping it from running on its own. Just a helpful tip, in the linked diagram part #10 the elbow that the fuel line connects to the carb by has a fine screen on it. That often plugs and stops fuel flow, the elbow needs to be removed from the card to clean it properly.

I would recommend you purchase some manuals for your tractor both an Operator's manual and a Service manual. This site sells them.
Just FYI, from that link you can view all the parts sections (they call them Functional Groups) for your tractor. At the top left to the right of the home button it says “404-International Tractor..” click that and it will get you to the list to view on the left on a PC and on the right there is preview panes shown as you select a “Group”. On a phone you have to click the own arrow on the right to get the preview panes to show.
