What Did I Break This Time?

I got a little aggressive while starting the tractor and now it won't crank.

What I did was "Double Pump" my push button starter. Basically trying to start it while it was still spinning. I did this a few times and during one of the tries it made a shorting out sound (like a zzzzz type sound) and then nothing.

I had a new starter relay solenoid laying around so I replaced that but nothing. Next I unhooked the starter push button and tried grounding it out. Best I could do was get one click out of the solenoid.

What should I test next? 1950 Front Mount 8N.

Happy Independence Day!

A little diagnosis on if you're getting voltage, and amperage to where you need it is the first step. You might have caused problems to the starter drive by hitting the button when you shouldn't have. Getting aggressive when starting is a new one on me.

Try turning the engine over at the fan by hand. I think the starter has jammed in the flywheel.
When I do this I can hear the starter gears rotating so I think you're right. I assume removing and reinstalling the starter will fix this?

Maybe. But the only way to accurately trouble shoot electrical problems is with a voltmeter. The are relatively inexpensive

Took the starter off and it's stuck in the engaged position. How do I get this to unengaged?

Searching mentions using a wire wheel to spin it back up but I don't have a wire wheel. Any other options?

Now that you have the starter out, if you hook it up with jumper cables will it run like it should ?

Hi Coby, if original design "spring on the end drive bendix", grab the gear /barrel and turn it. It should unscrew back to retracted position. It has no "locking when extended" feature.

When the engine starts, the flywheel changes from driven, to driving. Thats the dynamic that retracts the pinion gear.

Maybe I'm doing it wrong. It just clicks if I turn it one way and gets łonger if I turn it the other. How do I unscrew it?

Seems like it's half way engaged.

Turning the barrel downward on the side with the sharpie, will retract if not broken. Gotta hold the spring so it doesn't turn
