Sweet Corn Question

I know this may be a better question in the crops discussion but figured I would get more response here. My buddy and I would like to plant a sweet corn patch for our families and maybe some neighbors. I we purchased 5 pounds of seed, about how big of an area would that fill with rows 36" wide approximately? Just curious of how big an area I would need to prep. Thanks.
Hey there,

Great idea to plant a sweet corn patch for your families and neighbors! I've done something similar in the past, so I can give you a rough estimate.

Typically, a pound of sweet corn seed will cover about 200-250 feet of row. Given that you have 5 pounds of seed, you're looking at around 1,000 to 1,250 feet of row in total.

With rows spaced 36 inches (3 feet) apart, you can calculate the area like this:

  1. Determine the length of rows you can plant:
    • If you have 1,000 to 1,250 feet of row in total and decide to plant, for example, ten 100-foot rows, you would need about 300 feet in width (10 rows x 3 feet per row).
  2. Calculate the total area:
    • For ten 100-foot rows with 3 feet between rows, the total area would be roughly 100 feet x 30 feet (3 feet x 10 rows), which equals 3,000 square feet.
So, you'd need to prep an area of approximately 3,000 to 3,750 square feet, depending on your exact row length and the spacing you choose.

Remember to ensure good soil preparation and adequate irrigation, as sweet corn thrives with consistent moisture. Happy planting, and hope you get a bountiful harvest!
