Clutch problem d4 7u series

I bought a 1954 d4 7u series dozer and have a blade on it. It has been the most important piece of equipment I own as I live close to a river and have a ring dike to maintain. The clutch lever has never had a decent 'snap' to it so a couple years ago I replaced the clutch disc.( not that much fun! ) The old disc didn't look terribly worn, but I replaced anyway. Also throw out bearing and clutch shaft bearing on the trans side. Still couldnt adjust clutch to get that definate snap..Recently the clutch will not stay engaged and has an intense rattle that resonates to the clutch lever. The rattle gets better if I pull back as hard as I can on the lever. To The old cat pros out there, what do you suggest? Thanks.

Did you check the pines on cams and links and did you lock the bolt on collar

Thanks for the reply. I must confess, I'm no certified mechanic by any means.. As far as the pines on cams, and links, I imagine those are components of the cam assembly that moves the pressure plate to the disc? In which case, no, I didn't check those things..

It’s not so
Much the cat pro’s . It’s who can adjust a hand clutch. Tractors are no different. Should be a pin inside u pull out and turn the assembly to the next notch till the pin drops back in. If still not enough snap go one more hole.

Yes, I have adjusted the clutch a number of times. The locking bolt is secure. I can't seem to get it to snap the way it should, never did. Either too tight and hard to engage, or too loose and lever disengaged by itself..

That is a very interesting point you made Hector. The clutch lever has never felt right, and hard to adjust properly..

Unless everything is worn out like linkage and them pins inside on the over centre hub. Is that 2 fibre disc’s in there ?

It's a single fiber disc.

That is possible, is there any components of the clutch collar assembly that are available to buy I wonder?? If not, we have a decent welding and machine shop locally..

Today I drove the d4.into the shop where I'm going to work on it. As it was idling, I pulled the clutch compartment cover off and noticed that when I engage the clutch, the oil funnel/yoke assembly shook pretty bad. That is the rattling noise and clutch lever vibration problem for sure. I still need to inspect everything, but I know for a fact that the oil yoke needs work..

Got her tore apart today and the collar 7b5878 is worn and warped, and collar 3b697 is brass or bronze and has been worn to a gap of 9/16". Both collars are NOT available at the caterpillar dealer so I'm going to have to find used parts. The parts guy at cat said sometimes they have to use machinerytrader.com..Any other ideas? Thanks.
