Sediment Bowl Leak

I have a 1974 Farmall 140 and put a new sediment bowl assembly on it but it won't stop slow leaking gas around the brass nut where the gas flows out of the bowl and down to the carb. It appears to be lined up correctly and I tightened that nut but when I turn the gas on, it still slow leaks. Any tips on fixing that?

Yes. right around the nut where it goes into the housing. The metal pipe that goes into that nut and the other end of the pipe that connects down to the carb actually seems to want to pull out of the nut but I have it tightened up but still a slow leak. I attached a photo.

if its a fresh made up line then yes you need to give it the little extra to crimp the furrel to the line. if its an old line then it been tightened too much and the answer is a new line and fittings. nobody ever give complete info as to the situation.

Take it apart & look for a crack in the fitting and housing. If none then put some white sealing tape on the fitting before assembling.

I have to take the line apart on my 2424 every few years and reseal the joints. I my case it further up, the shut off assembly that leaks mainly.

It looks like the fitting was put in without any sealant. If the leak is coming from the fitting, take it out and wrap some teflon tape on the threads and put it back in. If it is the fitting, then you'll have to have it remade as the others have said.

Copper nickel line works good fro that use since it is easy to form by hand without kinking. flared or you flare is available in several different lengths even rolls. May have to buy the nuts separately if you buy the roll. I bought the new nut for when I used it on the brakes on the pickup a few years ago since I didn't know if it would be reusable.

Isn’t the yellow Teflon tape recommended for fuel applications ?

I put a new brass ferrule on the fuel line pipe and inserted the line into the left side of the sediment bowl brass nut and then tigtened the brass nut behind the ferrule and it stopped the drip of a leak of fuel but now, the tractor runs like it's not quite getting the full flow of fuel and makes me wonder if I might have done something wrong when putting the new fuel fittings in or overtightened the nut or something unrelated.

You need to manipulate/bend the line so it is inserted fully into the brass fitting and does not want to pull out. It should be held tightly, and should not pull out after the nut is tightened.

The new sediment bowls don't have a separate brass ferrule for the line. The outer piece is a ferrule and a nut in one piece.

No offense but there is no sealant on the tube-to-fitting, only on threads.

Nope. Impossible to crush the tube and restrict flow like that. The nut will strip out or snap off the sediment bowl long before that could even happen.

Very likely some piece of crud fell into the line and clogged it. Take the line off at the carburetor and verify fuel flow.

Try loosening the gas cap. If it isn't venting well, it will not run right.

140 is running fine now. I put a can of Seafoam in it too and maybe that also helped. Also, I notice when I leave the tractor outside, it seems to have a bit of trouble starting unlike when I keep it under the shed. But, I never leave it out in rain. I suppose I'm a bit worried about any possible fuel leaks from the sediment bowl fittings etc and actually the possibility of any fire starting from the hot engine but it appears I connected it back correctly and no leaks. Also, I need to get a replacemment gasket for under the fuel cap. The thin rubber gasket broke in half and the rest has fallen out too. I checked NAPA but they didn't have one. They had a replacement gasket for the sediment bowl, a cork one.

ihgascap.com from international harvester. its been an ongoing thing for over 40 years now due to a big law suit they had from a fire with the old caps. these are the tall caps and painted black so you know it is the replacemant cap.

The number you gave doesn't seem to work. The last piece of Navistar was bought up by Volkswagen and I don't think they continued the offer. That means someone is making these things and giving them away on behalf of a company defunct for 39 years. I'd like to find out what their angle is just out of curiosity.

look up ihgascap .com been quite a few years since i got caps. i remember i just called in. very easy to deal with.
