6 cylinder Hercules gas engine. It doesn't have a thermostat, should I put one in? If so what temperature?

Guessing it has a water pump. Best to have a thermostat, a 160 degree should work. I generally drill a small hole (less than 1/8") in the thermostat flange or valve wafer to let air vent when filling and allow some coolant to pass by the temp pellet for more consistent warming.

Most water pump engines used thermostats. Some thermosyphon systems only used radiator shutters.
